Inaugural Creative Matakana: success!
The first Creative Matakana has received rave reviews from participants, tutors and volunteers alike. Here are someC of the comments given regarding the week of creative workshops in May:
“Can’t think of anything to better this wonderful week.”
“Fantastic – have enjoyed the whole thing and will do it again!”
“Great promo of the Matakana and Mahurangi district. Creative Matakana again next year please!”
“I have had a wonderful week, but am aware of how much effort the volunteers have contributed… many, many thanks to everyone.”
“Hostesses outstandingly generous – went beyond expectation.”
Creative Matakana course tutors were recruited from around New Zealand. They were all highly qualified and, in many cases, multi award-winning masters of their art. Courses included eco-dyeing and felting with Marion van Oeveren, fiction writing with author Owen Marshall, kiln-formed glass and sandblasting with Liz Sharek, digital photography with David Wethey, flax (harakeke) weaving with Kahutoi Te Kanawa and sculpture with Jeff Thomson.
Food and wine were celebrated too in this area of exceptional local producers. At four beautiful venues, leading New Zealand chefs worked with artisans and winemakers to showcase their work in creative three course lunches. There were shared stories and tastings of delectable local products.
Vines Renowned Auckland chef Ben Bayly from the Grove and Baduzzi
Sea Guilio Sturla, chef of Lyttleton’s Roots restaurant
Fire Metro Auckland Chef of the Year Dariush Lolaiy
Earth Rising star of modern Maori cuisine Monique Fiso
Finally, a happy group were guided around Gibb’s Farm open-air sculpture park by Brick Bay’s art specialist Jonathon Organ.
A team of marvellous Matakana volunteers did everything from catering and providing venues to assisting the tutors, acting as guides and doing airport runs. Participants from all over New Zealand, Australia and even the United States learned from our talented tutors, exchanged ideas and met others with diverse creative interests. They also discovered the beaches, vineyards, walks, boutiques and markets of Matakana and Warkworth.
Creative Matakana 2018 is a certainty and we already have some brilliant courses locked in!
